Chemise

The chemise is a simple garment, worn next to the skin to protect the outer clothing from oils and perspiration. The exact shape of a chemise varies greatly but as a rule they are relatively shapeless, hanging straight down from the shoulders and made of linen. They are often made without buttons as they would be incredibly uncomfortable with a corset or stays over the top. As they are primarily a base layer, thin fabrics such as cotton or linen are most common.
